Respond: Los Angeles Fires (CTA)
Los Angeles is currently being ravaged by fire. Hundreds of thousands of people have been evacuated or displaced. Thousands have lost their homes. This is the biggest fire in the history of the city, and the devastation is unprecedented. Los Angeles has been my second home for 25 years and many of my friends and colleagues who live there have already lost their homes over night. It is time for us to step up and help those who are in need. During crisis we give. Unconditionall

The Army Truck
My truck has worked hard. It has delivered thousands of tons of food to those in crisis. For over three years my truck served the people of KZN, through Covid, riot and flood. My truck has worked hard. It has aged. During this time, my truck has been serviced and supported (and even fitted with an incredible suspension) by a group of men with corporate roles and resource. Their support was based on connection, connections they explored with the people of Inanda. These men use

Respond: Tongaat Tornado (CTA)
As has been the case in Kwa-Zulu Natal over the past four years, crisis has once again touched our province. A tornado touched down in Tongaat on 3 June, and caused widespread destruction, loss of life and despair. While the dash to provide immediate relief to the newly vulnerable is underway, Ubuntu Army would like to issue a word of caution. To civil and community To organisations on the ground, to corporates wishing to assist, and to the beautiful people, near and far, who

The Ubuntu Army Shines
In what is very quickly becoming the new normal at Ubuntu Army, donations streamed in today from Ubuntu soldiers across the planet. Amazing! The money and food is really making a difference and as Fr. George said to me today, the Ubuntu Army has made a real and significant impact on the Point community. Lives are being saved, and I thank you on behalf of the many thousands who have received food over the past four weeks. Today we distributed over 150 parcels. Mandatory mask

Ubuntu Food Chain (CTA)
There is such hunger on the streets of Durban, and the desperation is growing. The supply lines that should exist, that apparently exist, do not, and there is a very fine line between the vulnerable and starvation. Unfortunately, it has been left to us, the ordinary folk, the Ubuntu Army, and the other groups on the ground, to hold this line. It shouldn’t be like this, but it is. The government has no answers. In fact they even try to claim our small victories. There is only

Respond - A rainy day in Durban
A rainy day in Durban delivered real moments of joy. From the incredibly humble and grateful foreigners fed by Mandy Pearson’s efforts this afternoon, to the amazing donations that mysteriously continue to appear in our accounts, to the 78 food parcels that we handed out to vulnerable members of the Point Road area, to the kids in Bhambayi dancing in the rain. It was a good day, despite the lockdown blues that seem to grip most households that little bit harder on the gloomy

Respond - A World Record!
I discovered an interesting and peculiar fact today, perhaps a Guinness World Record at that. It is possible to fit 100 loaves of bread into the passenger space of a Landcruiser single cab pickup. Pleased I crossed that one off the bucket list. A very busy day of collecting and distributing food to the very poor and desperate in the CBD and to the crèche at the center of the Bhambayi Project. A big thank you to Eddie and Pierre from Ashton Family Cares for the donation of 40

Respond (Report) - 24 April 2020
Food Chain - The Point We finished! All the food parcels generated by the Ubuntu Army Food Chain, have been distributed, or allocated, and we estimate that about 3000 people will be fed as a result. Super stoked and relieved and exhausted, but mainly stoked. It would be fair to say that we faced peculiar and unexpected challenges, and definitely made mistakes along the way, but considering we are a bunch of ordinary Africans operating under extraordinary circumstances, the en
